The coaching staff of FC Lewix protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Justin Wies had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. 13 minutes into the game, one of FC Lewix:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. 20 minutes into the game, Edson Kläsener was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Schalker's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave FC Lewix the free kick. In the 20th match minute, Schalker was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Edson Kläsener to maneuver through the defense. An unexpectedly hard shot by Umberto Burke in the 21st minute of play forced Schalker's goalkeeper Kai Hoyer to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Hartmut Daum struck a weak shot in the 23rd minute. Kai Hoyer didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for FC Lewix. Kai Hoyer took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Hartmut Daum, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. During the 28th minute of the match Edson Kläsener completely mistimed his tackle and brought down his opponent. The referee gave Edson Kläsener a yellow card, his second in the match, which meant he could no longer take part in the game. FC Lewix's defense didn't have a chance, in the 41st minute, when Jan Kahn scored to the left of an out of position Sebald Popp, making the score, 2-1. If Hartmut Daum had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 46th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Af the end of the first half the score was 2-1. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Hartmut Daum made a kick off. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Dirk Gutmann during the 51st minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. A collision led to Schalker getting a freekick after 51 minutes play. Dirk Gutmann hit a great ball. In the 53rd minute Hartmut Daum shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kai Hoyer saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line.
