Peter Lussier showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Thorsten Füglister in the 6th minute of the match. The supporters of FC Basel 1982 booed when Cagliari was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 7 match minutes in a wonderful position. Mathias Naumann didn't get a good kick on the ball. Silvan Mahler took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 8th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Peter Lussier. Cagliari's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Peter Lussier made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Rainer Sonsini in the 10th minute of play. Jules Wiss hit a great freekick 11 minutes into the match. In the 12th minute of the match Silvan Mahler shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Peter Lussier showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. 14 minutes into the match, Cagliari's goal looked a bit too open when Donato Gilli came free, but Peter Lussier reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Peter Lussier showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Donato Gilli in the 17th minute of the match. Toni Pfändler charged in rather forcefully in the 19th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Toni Pfändler the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. Toni Pfändler kicked well hit freekick during the 19th minute of the match. 23 minutes into the game, Donato Gilli cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-1. Peter Lussier was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. 27 minutes into the game, Carl Rutten recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Mischa Rutsch. Carl Rutten showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-1. Harald Hegner sent away a hard shot on goal in the 31st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After a rather tough play, Cagliari's Mathias Naumann got a free kick in the 33rd minute. Peter Lussier took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Rainer Sonsini, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Matt Bleyer tried in the game's 37th match minute to clear up in front of his own goal but it went so bad that he put the ball into the goal to the left of an unhappy Mischa Rutsch. An annoying self made goal, 2-1. 43 minutes into the match, FC Basel 1982's goal looked a bit too open when Carl Rutten came free, but Mischa Rutsch reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 2-1 at half-time.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Harald Hegner to make the kick off. In the 53rd minute the ball was on its way in behind FC Basel 1982's goalkeeper Mischa Rutsch, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Carl Rutten received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 57th minute. Mischa Rutsch tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Cagliari's Harald Hegner got a good chance for a goal in the 61st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Carl Rutten blasted a shot towards the goal in the 63rd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Mischa Rutsch having to make a save. Harald Hegner might have been able to make a better finish in the 64th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Mischa Rutsch. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Harald Hegner ran back to his position shaking his head. Jay Labrie sent away a hard shot on goal in the 68th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Thorsten Füglister could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 71st minute of the match, but Peter Lussier made a huge save. Rainer Sonsini received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 75th minute. Peter Lussier tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. An unexpectedly hard shot by Harald Hegner in the 88th minute of play forced FC Basel 1982's goalkeeper Mischa Rutsch to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 91st match minute, FC Basel 1982 was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Rainer Sonsini to maneuver through the defense. 94 minutes into the match, Cagliari's goalkeeper Peter Lussier had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Donato Gilli. The crowd rose to their feet as FC Basel 1982's Holger Rager slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Peter Lussier. That made the score 2-2 after 95 minutes of play. The final whistle blew with the score still tied, and both teams left the pitch thinking about the missed chances that could have given their team the win.
