After a defensive mix-up in Sheffield United's zone, Pedro Gugolz stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Tommy Smith came out of the goal and Pedro Gugolz tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 4th minute Heinz Eichmann shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Tommy Smith saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Tommy Smith made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Heinz Eichmann in the 6th minute of play. Stefan Jurt struck a weak shot in the 6th minute. Stephen Rominger didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Sheffield United. Stefan Jurt sent away a hard shot on goal in the 8th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Francisco Rausis could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 10th minute of the match, but Stephen Rominger made a huge save. 13 minutes into the match, Pedro Gugolz had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Tommy Smith. Sheffield United's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Pedro Gugolz was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-1. Pedro Gugolz's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Tommy Smith read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 17th minute of play. Sheffield United's Stefan Jurt got a good chance for a goal in the 22nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The audience thought a goal was coming when Francisco Rausis got free with Stephen Rominger in the 24th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Tommy Smith showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Heinz Eichmann in the 26th minute of the match. If Heinz Eichmann had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 37th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 44 minutes into the match, YOUNG BOYS's Pedro Gugolz sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Tommy Smith narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Pedro Gugolz sent away a hard shot on goal in the 45th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Heinz Eichmann fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 48th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tommy Smith having to interfere. After the first half YOUNG BOYS were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

With a couple of smart ball manuevers Stefan Jurt in the 53rd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Stephen Rominger saved YOUNG BOYS from getting behind. Stephen Rominger made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Stefan Jurt in the 57th minute of play. In the 63rd minute of the match YOUNG BOYS got a corner. Sheffield United's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Geronimo Boss ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner ended in Geronimo Boss almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Sheffield United's Tommy Smith did a great save. An unexpectedly hard shot by Pedro Gugolz in the 70th minute of play forced Sheffield United's goalkeeper Tommy Smith to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Heinz Eichmann struck a weak shot in the 72nd minute. Tommy Smith didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for YOUNG BOYS. Pedro Gugolz received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 75th minute. Tommy Smith tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. A collision led to Sheffield United getting a freekick after 76 minutes play. Romain Heinzer hit a great ball. Benoit Amhof charged in rather forcefully in the 87th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Benoit Amhof the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 87th match minute, YOUNG BOYS was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Benoit Amhof to maneuver through the defense. Arnault Bauhofer didn't quite understand what happened when in the 89 minute of the game managed to get a great opportunity for a goal and then missed the goal by a feet. Stephen Rominger showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Stefan Jurt, who was totally free with the ball in the 93rd minute. Stefan Jurt might have been able to make a better finish in the 96th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Stephen Rominger. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Stefan Jurt ran back to his position shaking his head. The YOUNG BOYS players were relieved to hear the final whistle blow to end the match. The away crowd was happy to see their team win after a very tight game.
