Lugano's Lucius Berger played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Lamberto Riedweg in the 3rd minute of play. After 7 minutes, Benito Bocchi mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Berne Wanderers FC and the Lugano players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 6 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Berne Wanderers FC! 9 minutes into the match, Berne Wanderers FC's goal looked a bit too open when Falco Klein came free, but Cláudio Taffarel reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 12 minutes into the match, Robby Schaer had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Lucius Berger. Lugano's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Robby Schaer was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-1. A collision led to Berne Wanderers FC getting a freekick after 15 minutes play. Kristian Reuteler hit a great ball. Cláudio Taffarel took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Falco Klein, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 21st minute, Blair Yeats hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After 23 played minutes, Berne Wanderers FC's Fernando Erni shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Lucius Berger came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Berne Wanderers FC reached it. Through an outstanding action, after 24 minutes, Cláudio Taffarel successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. In the 26th match minute, Lugano was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Blair Yeats to maneuver through the defense. After 28 played minutes Berne Wanderers FC got a freekick which was hit by Kristian Reuteler. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Blair Yeats during the 33rd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 32 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Lugano! Fernando Erni charged in rather forcefully in the 38th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. Falco Klein's late challenge caught a Berne Wanderers FC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Bruno Guimarães in the 69th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Cláudio Taffarel saved Berne Wanderers FC from getting behind. 73 minutes into the match, Lugano's Patrizio Huber sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Cláudio Taffarel narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 74th minute, Bruno Guimarães left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Lugano fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-3. An unexpectedly hard shot by Bruno Guimarães in the 79th minute of play forced Berne Wanderers FC's goalkeeper Cláudio Taffarel to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. With a little luck, Lugano's Lucius Berger got control of the ball when Lamberto Riedweg tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 83rd minute of the match Berne Wanderers FC got a corner. Lugano's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Clayton Helmholz ran over to the corner to take the kick. Menelaos Fytanidis charged in rather forcefully in the 83rd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Menelaos Fytanidis the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In a very dangerous position, a player in Lugano fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 83rd minute. Penalty! The referee gave Berne Wanderers FC a penalty, 85 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Clayton Helmholz, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Lugano's Lucius Berger. 1-4. Cláudio Taffarel made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Bruno Guimarães in the 92nd minute of play. Paddy Aceto kicked well hit freekick during the 93rd minute of the match. The audience thought a goal was coming when Lamberto Riedweg got free with Lucius Berger in the 95th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Cláudio Taffarel showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Bruno Guimarães, who was totally free with the ball in the 98th minute. Berne Wanderers FC were delighted with the way they had won the match. They had held their defensive line well and made the most of their chances, to claim a victory over Lugano's much stronger midfield.
