The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Remie Grammet's late challenge caught a Sporting CP's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Remie Grammet helped the player get up and apologised. Dolf Temmerman received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 7th minute. Sven De Raedemaecker tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 9th minute Paul-Louis de Pelsmaecker shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Carel Van Kamp saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Robrecht Vrankx who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 14thth minute tested the skills of Sven De Raedemaecker when he managed to save the team from getting behind. A collision led to Ùnico Tongeren getting a freekick after 20 minutes play. Dolf Temmerman hit a great ball. Sven De Raedemaecker made an important save on a dangerous shot by Dolf Temmerman in the 23rd minute. When Paul-Louis de Pelsmaecker came up free with the goalie in the 26th minute, the Sporting CP fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Paul-Louis de Pelsmaecker couldn't finish the play. Carel Van Kamp made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Abel Temmerman in the 28th minute of play. Paul-Louis de Pelsmaecker kicked well hit freekick during the 31st minute of the match. In the 33rd minute, Abel Temmerman got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. If Dolf Temmerman had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 35th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 38th match minute, Sporting CP was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Tim Van Hoght to maneuver through the defense. With a little luck, Sporting CP's Sven De Raedemaecker got control of the ball when Brend Gyselinx tried to sneak it across the goal line. Willy Verhulst hit a great freekick 43 minutes into the match. Ùnico Tongeren's Carel Van Kamp played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Abel Temmerman in the 47th minute of play. Abel Temmerman took the ball and in the 47 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Carel Van Kamp. Carel Van Kamp dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. After the first half Sporting CP were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

After 52 minutes, Niels Pulix mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Sporting CP and the Ùnico Tongeren players grew even worse after the yellow card. Niels Pulix kicked well hit freekick during the 57th minute of the match. Robrecht Vrankx sent away a hard shot on goal in the 58th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Wayne Schaerlaekens kicked well hit freekick during the 64th minute of the match. Stijn Stas, 65 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. Remie Grammet got his second yellow card in the match during the 68th minute which meant that he had to leave the ground. If Robrecht Vrankx had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 71st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 73 minutes into the match, Robrecht Vrankx notched a goal, 1-1, to the right of Sporting CP's Sven De Raedemaecker. Sven De Raedemaecker was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. In the 78th match minute, Ùnico Tongeren was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Brend Gyselinx to maneuver through the defense. Ùnico Tongeren's Carel Van Kamp played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Paul-Louis de Pelsmaecker in the 80th minute of play. Abel Temmerman fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 81st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Carel Van Kamp having to interfere. With an all-out effort, Sporting CP's Carel Van Kamp threw himself towards the right post 86 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Paul-Louis de Pelsmaecker, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Willy Verhulst kicked well hit freekick during the 87th minute of the match. Paul-Louis de Pelsmaecker kicked well hit freekick during the 88th minute of the match. In the 88th minute, Paul-Louis de Pelsmaecker fired away a sharp free kick straight at the goal. It looked like it might be really tough for the goalie to handle, but the shot went into the stands to the left of Carel Van Kamp. When the match had gone on for 94 minutes, Paul-Louis de Pelsmaecker took a quick shot and it went in 1-2 without a chance for Carel Van Kamp to make any attempt to save it. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Sporting CP had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
