After 10 played minutes Borussia Dortmund got a freekick which was hit by Henk Knorr. In the 15th minute the ball was on its way in behind Borussia Dortmund's goalkeeper Helmut Hinz, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. An unexpectedly hard shot by Dennis-Maurice Kühn in the 22nd minute of play forced Borussia Dortmund's goalkeeper Helmut Hinz to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 24th minute, Ruben Pöck ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Kevin Karhoff was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-1. In the 31st minute, Finkenstein's Dennis-Maurice Kühn ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Helmut Hinz. Finkenstein's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Rainer Ramelow was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-2. Rainer Ramelow sent away a hard shot on goal in the 38th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. A collision led to Borussia Dortmund getting a freekick after 42 minutes play. Henk Knorr hit a great ball. 47 minutes into the match, Borussia Dortmund's goalkeeper Helmut Hinz had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Sebastian Ramusch. Helmut Hinz stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Dennis-Maurice Kühn's shot from short distance in the 48th minute. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The wind increased when Dennis-Maurice Kühn made the kick off in the second half. After some fancy dribbling in the 52nd minute, Ruben Pöck managed to get in a good position for a shot. Borussia Dortmund's supporters rose to their feet, but Ruben Pöck was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Kevin Karhoff breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 55th minute Sebastian Ramusch shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Helmut Hinz saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Nils Burkart's late challenge caught a Finkenstein's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Nils Burkart helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of Finkenstein booed when Borussia Dortmund was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 64 match minutes in a wonderful position. Nils Burkart didn't get a good kick on the ball. Robert Mokros, 65 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal.
