In the 6thth minute of the game Xamo Moreira who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Galatasaray SK's Gabriel Rathmann was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Rapid Wien's Xamo Moreira got a good chance for a goal in the 9th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Alberigo Prato made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Klaus Beudel in the 10th minute of play. The supporters of Galatasaray SK booed when Rapid Wien was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Heinz-Dieter Hendricks didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a defensive mix-up in Galatasaray SK's zone, Cyryl Walkowski stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Gabriel Rathmann came out of the goal and Cyryl Walkowski tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After some careless play in the Galatasaray SK defense, Cyryl Walkowski kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Gabriel Rathmann. The Galatasaray SK fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Gabriel Rathmann should have stopped the shot. Cyryl Walkowski's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Gabriel Rathmann read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 20th minute of play. In the 27th minute Xamo Moreira shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gabriel Rathmann saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Gabriel Rathmann took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Xamo Moreira, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Rapid Wien's defense didn't have a chance, in the 46th minute, when Joakim Frankvig scored to the left of an out of position Alberigo Prato, making the score, 2-2. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Through an outstanding action, after 86 minutes, Gabriel Rathmann successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. In the 89th minute, Rapid Wien's Xamo Moreira ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Gabriel Rathmann. Gabriel Rathmann yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 2-3. Alberigo Prato showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Eduard Säuml, who was totally free with the ball in the 94th minute. 95 minutes into the match, Eduard Säuml notched a goal, 3-3, to the right of Rapid Wien's Alberigo Prato. Alberigo Prato was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Rapid Wien were disappointed that they only managed a draw, even though they felt themselves to be the better team.
