In the 23rd minute Martin Oneț shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Bogdan Mangra saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. With his leg Nae Mutu managed to avoid a goal in the 26thth minute, when CS UNIVERSITATEA CRAIOVA's Denis Muscă fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. Nae Mutu acted impressively in front of the goal and made a superb save when he, in the 33rd minute, took the ball on the long shot from Alex Coroian. Cristinel Tapalagă's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Nae Mutu read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 37th minute of play. If Denis Muscă had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 39th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 47thth minute of the game Silviu Dobrea who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but CS UNIVERSITATEA CRAIOVA's Bogdan Mangra was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Bogdan Mangra showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Silviu Dobrea in the 48th minute of the match. Af the end of the first half the score was 1-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

An unexpectedly hard shot by Martin Udrescu in the 52nd minute of play forced FC Petrolul Ploiesti's goalkeeper Nae Mutu to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Bogdan Mangra showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Martin Oneț, who was totally free with the ball in the 54th minute. Nae Mutu showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Cristinel Tapalagă in the 56th minute of the match. Denis Muscă's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Nae Mutu read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 57th minute of play. In the 64th minute, Cristinel Tapalagă got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Denis Muscă struck a weak shot in the 66th minute. Nae Mutu didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for CS UNIVERSITATEA CRAIOVA. After a defensive mix-up in FC Petrolul Ploiesti's zone, Denis Muscă stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Nae Mutu came out of the goal and Denis Muscă tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 72nd minute, Petruț Lăzăroiu hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Mugurel Hodorog kicked well hit freekick during the 79th minute of the match. After a rather tough play, CS UNIVERSITATEA CRAIOVA's Sever Mazăre got a free kick in the 83rd minute.
