Iustinian Zmărăndache came out of the goal in the 11th minute to try and stop a shot by PHOENIX BUCURESTI's Mircea Voina. But to his dismay, Mircea Voina quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. After some careless play in the FC Universitatea Cluj defense, Claudiu Dudea kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Iustinian Zmărăndache. The FC Universitatea Cluj fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Iustinian Zmărăndache should have stopped the shot. An unexpectedly hard shot by Petruț Cosariu in the 18th minute of play forced FC Universitatea Cluj's goalkeeper Iustinian Zmărăndache to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The supporters of FC Universitatea Cluj booed when PHOENIX BUCURESTI was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 19 match minutes in a wonderful position. Mugurel Sârban didn't get a good kick on the ball. Iustinian Zmărăndache didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Mircea Voina went, in the 34th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-3 was the resulting score. Iustinian Zmărăndache showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Mircea Voina, who was totally free with the ball in the 37th minute. Iustinian Zmărăndache took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Petruț Cosariu, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Iustinian Zmărăndache showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Mircea Voina in the 42nd minute of the match. A collision led to FC Universitatea Cluj getting a freekick after 42 minutes play. Isac Inculeț hit a great ball. 47 minutes into the match, FC Universitatea Cluj's goal looked a bit too open when Petruț Cosariu came free, but Iustinian Zmărăndache reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Giannis Kalomiris was the one to do the kick off. Maxim Miclauș had in the 87thth minute some difficulties stopping Waclaw Markowski's well aimed penalty as it nearly passed him on his left side, but he still managed to hold the ball. 88 minutes into the game, Marin Itoafă was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. PHOENIX BUCURESTI's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave FC Universitatea Cluj the free kick. After 89 played minutes PHOENIX BUCURESTI got a freekick which was hit by Marin Itoafă. After a defensive mix-up in PHOENIX BUCURESTI's zone, Giannis Kalomiris stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Maxim Miclauș came out of the goal and Giannis Kalomiris tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. FC Universitatea Cluj's Fellipe Guedes got a good chance for a goal in the 97th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched PHOENIX BUCURESTI eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
