The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Niyazi Özarkın recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 13th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Barcelona's zone, Nikos Eleftheropoulos stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Dimitris Tavanopoulos came out of the goal and Nikos Eleftheropoulos tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After 19 played minutes Barcelona got a freekick which was hit by Dimitris Kanatas. 22 minutes into the game, Kostas Labakis cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-1. Dimitris Tavanopoulos was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Dimitris Tavanopoulos showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Niyazi Özarkın in the 27th minute of the match. Nikos Eleftheropoulos recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 35th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a rather tough play, Juniors's Stathis Michopoulos got a free kick in the 36th minute. Barcelona's Dimitris Tavanopoulos played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Nikos Eleftheropoulos in the 47th minute of play. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-1 lead.

After 51 minutes, Telis Karagiannidis mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Barcelona and the Juniors players grew even worse after the yellow card. Dimitris Tavanopoulos was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. The audience thought a goal was coming when Niyazi Özarkın got free with Dimitris Tavanopoulos in the 87th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. 89 minutes into the game, Achilleas Pechlivanidis was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Barcelona's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Juniors the free kick.
