Taru Bajaj stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Mahinder Naik's shot from short distance in the 4th minute. 11 minutes into the game, Divoja Patiala was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Grimsby's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Southampton the free kick. After 11 played minutes Grimsby got a freekick which was hit by Divoja Patiala. Sudhir Sehgal recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 22nd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Naginderjeet Kamle in the 29th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Sarda Kohli saved Southampton from getting behind. Sudhir Sehgal sent away a hard shot on goal in the 31st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. An unexpectedly hard shot by Sudhir Sehgal in the 40th minute of play forced Grimsby's goalkeeper Taru Bajaj to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Taru Bajaj took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Sudhir Sehgal, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Naginderjeet Kamle was the one to do the kick off. Kistna Ojha sent away a hard shot on goal in the 51st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Sudhir Sehgal received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 54th minute. Taru Bajaj tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 58 played minutes Southampton got a freekick which was hit by Andha Gupta. In the 59th minute of the match Amandev Mukhopadhyay shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Sarda Kohli showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. In the 60th minute Naginderjeet Kamle shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sarda Kohli saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Manoo Shergill took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 63rd minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Taru Bajaj. Grimsby's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Sarda Kohli made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Divoja Patiala in the 66th minute of play. Ehsan Deshmukh shot the penalty kick right outside the post. Thanks to some nice moves Mahinder Naik could shoot a difficult shot in the 85th minute, which Taru Bajaj however easily saved by the left post. Grimsby's Taru Bajaj played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Sudhir Sehgal in the 92nd minute of play. Taru Bajaj showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Sudhir Sehgal, who was totally free with the ball in the 94th minute. Sarda Kohli took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Divoja Patiala, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. When the match was over Southampton could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than Grimsby throughout the match.
