Spectators: 5000 (Terracing: 4000, Seating: 1000, VIP seats: 0) Dark clouds were building up when the players entered the field. None of the them looked very eager to play. Nguyễn Khoi started the match with the kick off. After having played for 4 minutes, Nguyễn Phu managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Việt Nam's supporters crossed their fingers, but Nguyễn Phu was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After some careless play in the Việt Nam defense, Nguyễn Khoi kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Trần Xuan. The Việt Nam fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Trần Xuan should have stopped the shot. In the 18th minute, Đặng Lam got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Liễu Duc kicked well hit freekick during the 26th minute of the match. 30 minutes into the match, Việt Nam's goal looked a bit too open when Nguyễn Khoi came free, but Trần Xuan reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Trần Xuan showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Nguyễn Khoi in the 31st minute of the match. If Nguyễn Phu had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 33rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by Nguyễn Hung in the 42nd minute of play forced Dien Bien Phu's goalkeeper Phạm Pham to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When Nguyễn Phu came up free with the goalie in the 46th minute, the Việt Nam fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Nguyễn Phu couldn't finish the play. Phạm Pham took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Nguyễn Tu, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-1 lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Nguyễn Hung was the one to do the kick off. Trần Xuan was out of position in the 53 minute of play, and Nguyễn Khoi capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Nguyễn Khoi really showed his touch with that goal: 0-2. In the 56th match minute, Việt Nam was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Nguyễn Tu to maneuver through the defense. Nguyễn Hung fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 61st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Phạm Pham having to interfere. In the 62nd match minute, Dien Bien Phu was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Liễu Duc to maneuver through the defense. After 66 minutes of play, Việt Nam's Nguyễn Hung made it 1-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Phạm Pham was left in no man's land by his defense there! Nguyễn Khoi sent away a hard shot on goal in the 71st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. If Nguyễn Phu had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 73rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 77thth minute of the game Nguyễn Khoi who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Việt Nam's Trần Xuan was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Liễu Duc during the 84th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 84 played minutes Dien Bien Phu got a freekick which was hit by Liễu Duc. In the 86th minute Nguyễn Phu shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Phạm Pham saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. A beautiful save bye Dien Bien Phu's goalie prevented a goal. A collision led to Dien Bien Phu getting a freekick after 95 minutes play. Liễu Duc hit a great ball. The Dien Bien Phu supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Dien Bien Phu would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
