The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. With a little luck, Dong Xoai's Lê Phong got control of the ball when Trần Thanh Bình tried to sneak it across the goal line. The audience thought a goal was coming when Trần Thanh Bình got free with Lê Phong in the 13th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Võ Thien recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 16th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 17th match minute, Vinh Long was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Ngô Thuyet to maneuver through the defense. 21 minutes into the match, Đặng Loc notched a goal, 0-1, to the right of Vinh Long's Phạm Hong. Phạm Hong was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. 26 minutes into the game, Trần Viet was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Vinh Long's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Dong Xoai the free kick. A collision led to Vinh Long getting a freekick after 26 minutes play. Trần Viet hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Đặng Loc in the 27th minute of play forced Vinh Long's goalkeeper Phạm Hong to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 28 minutes into the match, Đặng Loc had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Phạm Hong. Vinh Long's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Đặng Loc was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-2. Nguyễn Quang's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Phạm Hong read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 35th minute of play.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Nguyễn Quang to strike the kick off in the second half. If Đặng Loc had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 52nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Nguyễn Quang received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 54th minute. Phạm Hong tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After having played for 56 minutes, Trần Thanh Bình managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Vinh Long's supporters crossed their fingers, but Trần Thanh Bình was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Trần Thanh Bình sent away a hard shot on goal in the 59th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After some fancy dribbling in the 63rd minute, Trần Thanh Bình managed to get in a good position for a shot. Vinh Long's supporters rose to their feet, but Trần Thanh Bình was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Lê Phong breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. 65 minutes into the match, Dong Xoai's goal looked a bit too open when Võ Thien came free, but Lê Phong reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Trần Thanh Bình sent away a hard shot on goal in the 67th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. After having played for 73 minutes, Đặng Loc managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Dong Xoai's supporters crossed their fingers, but Đặng Loc was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Lê Phong made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Trần Thanh Bình in the 75th minute of play. In the 80th minute Nguyễn Quang shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Phạm Hong saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 88 minutes into the game, Vinh Long's Võ Thien nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Lê Phong made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-2. In the 91st minute, Lê Huynh Duc hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After recieving a nice pass, Vinh Long's Phạm Teo tried to score from far away in the 92nd minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. Lê Phong showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Trần Thanh Bình, who was totally free with the ball in the 94th minute. Võ Thien blasted a shot towards the goal in the 96th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Lê Phong having to make a save.
