The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. 3 minutes into the game, Trần Thuyet was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Hoang Anh Gia Lai's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Phu Ly the free kick. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Nguyễn Hong Minh couldn't finish the play. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

When the match clock showed 59 minutes, the score became 1-0 when Nguyễn Huỳnh sped through Hoang Anh Gia Lai's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Nguyễn Nga. After a rather tough play, Hoang Anh Gia Lai's Trần Thuyet got a free kick in the 61st minute. After 64 minutes of play Hoang Anh Gia Lai's Trần Thuyet was too eager in his attempt to stop his opponent and brought him down. With that he got his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground.
