The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Nguyễn Nghiêm-Minh during the 12th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Lê Nam recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 13th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Nguyễn Lan charged in rather forcefully in the 16th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Nguyễn Lan the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. After a rather tough play, Vietnam's Nguyễn Lan got a free kick in the 16th minute. Nguyễn Thien's late challenge caught a Son La's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Nguyễn Thien helped the player get up and apologised. In the 17th match minute, Vietnam was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Nguyễn Thien to maneuver through the defense. 20 minutes into the match, Vietnam's goal looked a bit too open when Hoàng Nhật Minh came free, but Trần Hong reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Trần Hong was left in no man's land by his defense there! The crowd rose to their feet as Vietnam's Lê Tan slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of La Thanh. That made the score 1-2 after 31 minutes of play. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Nguyễn Nguyet in the 36th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg La Thanh saved Son La from getting behind. Trần Hong made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Lê Nam in the 37th minute of play. Vietnam's Trần Hong played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Hoàng Nhật Minh in the 38th minute of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Nguyễn Tuan Hoang got free with La Thanh in the 40th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Nguyễn Nguyet's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 42ndth minute, La Thanh skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 1-2.

Trần Hong was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. An unexpectedly hard shot by Lê Nam in the 94th minute of play forced Vietnam's goalkeeper Trần Hong to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Trần Hong was out of position in the 96 minute of play, and Lê Nam capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Lê Nam really showed his touch with that goal: 2-5.
