In the 11th match minute, Maxwelton was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Fletcher Moorby to maneuver through the defense. Tony Woods's late challenge caught a Maxwelton's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Thomas Wilson might have been able to make a better finish in the 23rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Byrne Hayman. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Thomas Wilson ran back to his position shaking his head. Thomas Wilson fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 28th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Byrne Hayman having to interfere. An unexpectedly hard shot by Otto Haslem in the 30th minute of play forced Maxwelton's goalkeeper Byrne Hayman to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Thomas Wilson had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Otto Haslem to strike the kick off in the second half. Maxwelton's Byrne Hayman proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 72nd minute of the match, managed to save Maxwelton from getting a goal against them. With an all-out effort, Earlwood's Byrne Hayman threw himself towards the right post 78 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Otto Haslem, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Byrne Hayman took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Otto Haslem, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Arnie Ayrton fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 87th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Byrne Hayman having to interfere. Ralph Kuskoff might have been able to make a better finish in the 91st minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Peter Starling. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Ralph Kuskoff ran back to his position shaking his head. Thomas Wilson received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 95th minute. Byrne Hayman tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere.
