The Ellam fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Doyle Newton should have stopped the shot. Payne Plummer ran back to his position shaking his head. Doyle Newton stood somewhat misplaced when Bray Cubitt came free in front of goal and shot 3-1 to the left of him in the 29 minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Damon Gronow in the 36th minute of play forced Melbourne City's goalkeeper Mitchell Mcquoid to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Doyle Newton made a fantastic save in the 38th minute, when Larry Notley sent off a good shot on target.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Bray Cubitt to make the kick off. Ellam's Doyle Newton played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bray Cubitt in the 59th minute of play. 61 minutes into the match, Melbourne City's goalkeeper Mitchell Mcquoid had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Michael Soekirno. In the 62nd match minute, Ellam was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Bryan Favas to maneuver through the defense. Blake Orvad recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 63rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a rather tough play, Melbourne City's Calvin Meyers got a free kick in the 69th minute. Hal Norman's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Mitchell Mcquoid read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 70th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Payne Plummer in the 78th minute of play forced Ellam's goalkeeper Doyle Newton to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Payne Plummer fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 83rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Doyle Newton having to interfere. In the 88th match minute, Ellam was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Damon Gronow to maneuver through the defense. In the 92nd match minute, Melbourne City was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Max Whitmore to maneuver through the defense. It was no surprise that this one had ended in a win for the home team. Melbourne City had played much better football throughout.
