The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. 5 minutes into the match, GuateFortín's Thierry Henry sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Elpidio Vitin narrowly saved just below the crossbar. GuateFortín's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Angel Alvarenga in the 6th minute. Cristian Naike blasted a shot towards the goal in the 7th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Nery Pumpido having to make a save. The audience was convinced that Cristian Naike's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Nery Pumpido was relentless in the 12th minute of the game. Severo Maule made in the 15th minute of the game a throw-in that took a bad bounce and was taken care of by GuateFortín's Roberto Trotta. 16 minutes into the match, GuateFortín's goalkeeper Nery Pumpido had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Cristian Naike. Santos Fonda struck a weak shot in the 23rd minute. Nery Pumpido didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Vélez Juniors. In the 25th minute Sven-Edvin Jansson shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Elpidio Vitin saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 28 minutes into the match, GuateFortín's goal looked a bit too open when Cristian Naike came free, but Nery Pumpido reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Elpidio Vitin made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Zico Zellier in the 29th minute of play. After 34 minutes of play, Vélez Juniors's Cristian Naike made it 2-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Nery Pumpido was left in no man's land by his defense there! A collision led to GuateFortín getting a freekick after 36 minutes play. Zico Zellier hit a great ball. Elpidio Vitin showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Zico Zellier in the 40th minute of the match. In the 42nd minute Sven-Edvin Jansson shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Elpidio Vitin saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. A collision led to Vélez Juniors getting a freekick after 43 minutes play. Benigno Gurutz hit a great ball. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-0.

GuateFortín's Nery Pumpido played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Santos Fonda in the 59th minute of play. 61 minutes into the match, GuateFortín's goal looked a bit too open when Cristian Naike came free, but Nery Pumpido reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cristian Naike in the 64th minute of play forced GuateFortín's goalkeeper Nery Pumpido to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Angel Alvarenga might have been able to make a better finish in the 66th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Elpidio Vitin. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Angel Alvarenga ran back to his position shaking his head. Nery Pumpido didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Cristian Naike went, in the 67th minute, to the upper right corner, 3-0 was the resulting score. GuateFortín made a substitution. Elpidio Vitin stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Mario Gomez's shot from short distance in the 73rd minute. 78 minutes into the match, Mario Gomez notched a goal, 3-1, to the right of Vélez Juniors's Elpidio Vitin. Elpidio Vitin was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. GuateFortín's Nery Pumpido played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Benigno Gurutz in the 85th minute of play. In the 92nd minute, Cristian Naike ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Nery Pumpido was frozen by the shot and now it was 4-1.
