But to his dismay, Leandro Soares quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-2. 42 minutes into the match, Fc Benefica's goalkeeper Mitchel Dijkstra had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Álvaro Recoba. Mitchel Dijkstra took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jan-Erik Åström, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 46th minute, Jens van Basten hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Leandro Soares to strike the kick off in the second half. The audience thought a goal was coming when Leandro Soares got free with Constantin Maali in the 51st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort.
