The throw-in from Arthur Guerra in the 20th minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by SC Braga's Jon-Egil Sætre. Zigmantas Gimbutas's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Armindo Salgado read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 21st minute of play. Jon-Egil Sætre received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 29th minute. Armindo Salgado tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 31 minutes into the match, SC Braga's Zigmantas Gimbutas sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Armindo Salgado narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The corner led SC Braga's Amado Parente to fire away a dangerous shot which Armindo Salgado despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Zigmantas Gimbutas got free with Armindo Salgado in the 44th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 45th minute Luís Caeiro shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Laçın Cumayev saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line.
