FC Bruges's Luc Van Hinnendael played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ümit Karan in the 22nd minute of play. After some careless play in the FC Bruges defense, Ümit Karan kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Luc Van Hinnendael. The FC Bruges fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Luc Van Hinnendael should have stopped the shot. Vítor Baia made an important save on a dangerous shot by Xavies Muñagorri in the 30th minute. In the 30th minute, Xavies Muñagorri reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Vítor Baia.
