Óscar Cordoba made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Luciano Vidal in the 26th minute of play. Sporting de Gijón's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Saturnino Curcio in the 31st minute. The corner ended in Saturnino Curcio almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Imperio Académico's Adrian Clis did a great save. Luciano Vidal fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 33rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Óscar Cordoba having to interfere. Óscar Cordoba made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Luciano Vidal in the 37th minute of play. With a little luck, Imperio Académico's Adrian Clis got control of the ball when Venancio Emesto tried to sneak it across the goal line. 46 minutes into the game, Imperio Académico's Alfredo Llorienzo nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The audience thought a goal was coming when Hilario Tab got free with Óscar Cordoba in the 57th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After 58 minutes, Saturnino Curcio mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Sporting de Gijón and the Imperio Académico players grew even worse after the yellow card.
