An unexpectedly hard shot by Pankracy Birkenhagen in the 3rd minute of play forced Panama's goalkeeper Marcos Cotilla to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When Tomas Berganza came up free with the goalie in the 5th minute, the Panama fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Tomas Berganza couldn't finish the play. 7 minutes into the game, Tomas Berganza cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-1. Kazimierz Czekaj was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. 18 minutes into the match, Panama's goal looked a bit too open when Napoleon Fronczak came free, but Marcos Cotilla reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Napoleon Fronczak did some fancy footwork in front of goal and succeeded to deceive the defenders so he could slam the ball in 2-1 to the left of a surprised Marcos Cotilla 28 minutes into the match. If Tomas Berganza had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 32nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Kazimierz Czekaj didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Abraham Alguacil went, in the 35th minute, to the upper right corner, 2-2 was the resulting score. Marcos Cotilla showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Napoleon Fronczak in the 41st minute of the match. With a little luck, Panama's Marcos Cotilla got control of the ball when Miroslaw Wojno tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 47th minute Abraham Alguacil shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kazimierz Czekaj saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. In the 70th minute, Jose Carita hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Kajetan Setara during the 76th minute.
