The audience thought a goal was coming when Niculae Ungureanu got free with Marco Day in the 26th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. 34 minutes into the match, USA's goalkeeper Marco Day had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Niculae Ungureanu. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Cassius Byrne in the 40th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Andriy Lunin saved SC Freiburg 1904 e.V. from getting behind. USA's Marco Day proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 47th minute of the match, managed to save USA from getting a goal against them. In the 48th minute of the match SC Freiburg 1904 e.V. got a corner. USA's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. The score stood at 1-1 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Niculae Ungureanu couldn't finish the play. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling David Elodio in the 65th minute a chance for a shot on goal.
