The referee ignored Ecuador's protests and gave Antonio Arias a yellow card for diving instead. 18 minutes into the game, one of Ecuador:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. Guilian Hombroeckx received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Julio Vera came out and tried to block the shot, but Guilian Hombroeckx slotted it home off the left post making it 1-0 in the 20th minute.
