Pepe Santoro took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cristian Sancho, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 25 played minutes Independiente got a freekick which was hit by Sören Bengtsson. After some fancy dribbling in the 28th minute, Isidoro Beltran managed to get in a good position for a shot. Independiente's supporters rose to their feet, but Isidoro Beltran was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Julio Vera breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Agustín Saelices fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 29th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Pepe Santoro having to interfere. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Cristian Sancho in the 31st managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Pepe Santoro saved Independiente from getting behind. Independiente's Pepe Santoro played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Luis Andino in the 33rd minute of play. Ecuador's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Daniel Zorita in the 34th minute. 38 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Jorg Pieters came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After taking down the ball on Independiente's corner Napoleon Dropinski fired away a hard shot, but the defenders efficiently covered the most dangerous angles and Julio Vera quite easily take care of the ball. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-0.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Isidoro Beltran was the one to do the kick off. Julio Vera showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Isidoro Beltran, who was totally free with the ball in the 51st minute. The corner led Independiente's Jorg Pieters to fire away a dangerous shot which Julio Vera despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Cristian Sancho had several of the Independiente's defenders around him in the penalty area when he, after 57 minutes of play, received a pass and succeeded in some way to shoot a shot which went straight ahead into goal. This resulted in a 2-1 score and a disappointed Pepe Santoro as he didn't even see the shot coming. An unexpectedly hard shot by Isidoro Beltran in the 61st minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Julio Vera showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Isidoro Beltran in the 64th minute of the match. Cristian Sancho's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Pepe Santoro read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 67th minute of play. The audience was convinced that Isidoro Beltran's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Julio Vera was relentless in the 70th minute of the game. Independiente's Serafín Berganza was substituted for Albano Bertol. In the 96th minute, Sören Bengtsson left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Independiente fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 5-1.
