But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Roberto Elazar couldn't finish the play. Julio Mazuste hit a great freekick 31 minutes into the match. Abel Carballo's late challenge caught a Real Suciedad's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Abel Carballo helped the player get up and apologised. A collision led to Costa Rica getting a freekick after 34 minutes play. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-0.
