The Scarlet Speedster fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Umberto de Salles should have stopped the shot. Umberto de Salles made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cristian Sancho in the 32nd minute of play. 36 minutes into the match, Scarlet Speedster's goal looked a bit too open when Daniel Zorita came free, but Umberto de Salles reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Leonardo Pombal fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 37th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Julio Vera having to interfere. Scarlet Speedster's Umberto de Salles played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cristian Sancho in the 39th minute of play. Cristian Sancho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 45th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Julio Vera made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Narciso Bueno in the 47th minute of play. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-2.

The supporters of Scarlet Speedster booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 70 match minutes in a wonderful position. Antonio Arias didn't get a good kick on the ball. Ecuador played a much better game than Scarlet Speedster and deserved their victory. The Scarlet Speedster players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
