Dante Lacasa took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Alvito Helguera, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Mexico's Joel Gaona got a good chance for a goal in the 19th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Joel Gaona sent away a hard shot on goal in the 47th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Joel Gaona stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. In the 53rd minute Mexico were awarded a corner. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched Mexico eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
