The player immediately received a yellow card. Hector Covarrubias fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 47th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mehmet Ali Tongal having to interfere. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The coaching staff of Paraguay protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Iker Tafalla had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. In a very dangerous position, a player in Paraguay fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 74th minute. Penalty!
