Wilton Dracena made a fantastic save in the 9th minute, when Daniel Zorita sent off a good shot on target. Wilton Dracena made an important save on a dangerous shot by Daniel Zorita in the 14th minute. Julio Vera took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Marcelino Granados, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 18th minute, Marcelino Granados made a precise shot to the right of Julio Vera. Ecuador's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. Wilton Dracena was a little too slow when Luis Andino got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 25th minute. The score was now 1-1. Marcelino Granados fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 30th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Julio Vera having to interfere. In the 34th minute of the match, Daniel Zorita got a very nice opportunity to score, but Wilton Dracena was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. An unexpectedly hard shot by Marcelino Granados in the 39th minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Daniel Zorita could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 42nd minute of the match, but Wilton Dracena made a huge save. When Felix Montenegro came up free with the goalie in the 45th minute, the Ecuador fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Felix Montenegro couldn't finish the play. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Ecuador's Agustín Saelices got a good chance for a goal in the 86th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Syvwlch Lloyd who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 88thth minute tested the skills of Julio Vera when he managed to save the team from getting behind.
