Kostas Kourmouzis tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 17th minute Daniel Zorita shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kostas Kourmouzis saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Ecuador's Julio Vera proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 21st minute of the match, managed to save Ecuador from getting a goal against them. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 3-0 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Julio Vera dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 5-0. Ecuador's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
