An unexpectedly hard shot by Eladio Ulloa in the 13th minute of play forced USA's goalkeeper Marco Day to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. José Luis Chilavert didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Edward Mcdonald went, in the 15th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. An unexpectedly hard shot by René Puente in the 21st minute of play forced USA's goalkeeper Marco Day to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Monty Rogers's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but José Luis Chilavert read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 23rd minute of play. 24 minutes had been played when some careless play by Ballet Azul's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Cassius Byrne was slow to take the kick. During this time USA's players had a chance to rest. The supporters of USA booed when Ballet Azul was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 30 match minutes in a wonderful position. Romeo Passi didn't get a good kick on the ball. After having played for 31 minutes, Cassius Byrne managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. USA's supporters crossed their fingers, but Cassius Byrne was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. José Luis Chilavert made an important save on a dangerous shot by Cassius Byrne in the 33rd minute. After a rather tough play, Ballet Azul's Romeo Passi got a free kick in the 39th minute. After 39 played minutes, USA's Cassius Byrne shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in USA reached it. Cassius Byrne could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 44th minute of the match, but José Luis Chilavert made a huge save. In the 45th match minute, USA was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Cassius Byrne to maneuver through the defense. Marco Day made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Eulalio Callejas in the 47th minute of play. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The wind increased when Cassius Byrne made the kick off in the second half. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Cassius Byrne in the 53rd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg José Luis Chilavert saved Ballet Azul from getting behind. José Luis Chilavert stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Cassius Byrne's shot from short distance in the 53rd minute. If Eulalio Callejas had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 55th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 56 minutes into the match, Cassius Byrne notched a goal, 2-1, to the right of Ballet Azul's José Luis Chilavert. José Luis Chilavert was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Monty Rogers scored 3-1 in the 61st match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of José Luis Chilavert, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. USA made a substitution. Sam Campbell replaced Cassius Byrne. Ballet Azul made a substitution. Odín Enríquez replaced Eulalio Callejas. In the 67th match minute, Ballet Azul was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Pepe Rojas to maneuver through the defense. In the 68th minute, Sam Campbell ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. José Luis Chilavert was frozen by the shot and now it was 4-1. Marco Day made a fantastic save in the 89th minute, when Odín Enríquez sent off a good shot on target. In the 91st minute Khalid Parry shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but José Luis Chilavert saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. José Luis Chilavert showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Sam Campbell in the 93rd minute of the match. There was no doubt that USA were the better team. USA's players enjoyed the ovations of the crowd after the victory.
