Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Romulo Lalla in the 2nd minute of play. After having played for 5 minutes, Agustín Saelices managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ecuador's supporters crossed their fingers, but Agustín Saelices was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Santa Fe's Shao Jing Yuan played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Daniel Zorita in the 8th minute of play. Romulo Lalla struck a weak shot in the 9th minute. Julio Vera didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Santa Fe. Romulo Lalla received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 13th minute. Julio Vera tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 17th minute, Cristian Sancho got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 21st minute, Romulo Lalla hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. When Cristian Sancho came up free with the goalie in the 26th minute, the Ecuador fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Cristian Sancho couldn't finish the play. Daniel Zorita received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 28th minute. Shao Jing Yuan tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 31 minutes into the match, Santa Fe's Roque Roso sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Julio Vera narrowly saved just below the crossbar. A nice corner shot did that Juan Fernando Pratto got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Julio Vera quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. Romulo Lalla recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 35th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Daniel Zorita sent away a hard shot on goal in the 36th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 42 minutes into the match, Santa Fe's goal looked a bit too open when Cristian Sancho came free, but Shao Jing Yuan reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 44 minutes into the match, Ecuador's Cristian Sancho sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Shao Jing Yuan narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 45th minute of the match Ecuador got a corner. Santa Fe's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Daniel Zorita ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner went over the outstretched arms of Santa Fe's goalie and right to Felix Montes. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. Santa Fe's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. In the 47th minute, Cristian Sancho ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Shao Jing Yuan was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. Santa Fe made a substitution. Mauricio Montes replaced Santi Ogazón.
When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Romulo Lalla made a kick off. An unexpectedly hard shot by Romulo Lalla in the 53rd minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After 54 minutes Ecuador's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Juan Fernando Pratto who took care of the corner kick. In the 73rd minute of the match Santa Fe got a corner. Ecuador's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Juan Fernando Pratto ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner ended in Juan Fernando Pratto almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Ecuador's Julio Vera did a great save. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 89th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Julio Vera showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Romulo Lalla in the 91st minute of the match. Cristian Sancho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 95th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Daniel Zorita fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 96th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Shao Jing Yuan having to interfere. When the match was over Ecuador could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than Santa Fe throughout the match.
