Pedro Manzanares made an important save on a dangerous shot by Eulalio Callejas in the 10th minute. 11 minutes into the match, Eulalio Callejas dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Pedro Manzanares, 1-0. José Luis Chilavert took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Abram Sarmiento, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Eulalio Callejas could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 19th minute of the match, but Pedro Manzanares made a huge save. In the 21st minute Axel Montenegro shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but José Luis Chilavert saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 24 minutes in the game Samuel Navarro did a throw-in, and the ball was quickly in game thanks to Santino Seco. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Axel Montenegro in the 30th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck José Luis Chilavert prevented the ball from getting in the gole. 34 minutes into the match, Colombia's goalkeeper Pedro Manzanares had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Eulalio Callejas. Colombia's defense didn't have a chance, in the 36th minute, when Eulalio Callejas scored to the left of an out of position Pedro Manzanares, making the score, 2-0. An unexpectedly hard shot by Santino Seco in the 41st minute of play forced Ballet Azul's goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Eulalio Callejas in the 45thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Pedro Manzanares, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save.

The supporters of Ballet Azul booed when Colombia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 55 match minutes in a wonderful position. Orlando Tafalla didn't get a good kick on the ball. After some careless play in the Ballet Azul defense, Abram Secada kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of José Luis Chilavert. The Ballet Azul fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that José Luis Chilavert should have stopped the shot.
