When Per-Arne Hammarström fell near the penalty area in the 9th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Smurfarna's protests and gave Per-Arne Hammarström a yellow card for diving instead. Per-Arne Hammarström kicked well hit freekick during the 9th minute of the match. Agustín Saelices struck a weak shot in the 11th minute. Tord Fors didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Ecuador. Luis Andino sent away a hard shot on goal in the 13th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Cristian Sancho's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Tord Fors read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 17th minute of play. Arne Askstedt's late challenge caught a Ecuador's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Arne Askstedt helped the player get up and apologised. Julio Vera was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Cristian Sancho couldn't finish the play. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

After 61 minutes Smurfarna's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Daniel Zorita who took care of the corner kick. The corner led to Ecuador's Luis Andino getting away a dangerous shot that went just outside the goal. Agustín Saelices fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 66th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tord Fors having to interfere. 73 minutes into the match, Smurfarna's goalkeeper Tord Fors had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Felix Montenegro. Cristian Sancho came free with the goalkeeper in the 74th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Tord Fors could save by the left post. Julio Vera took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tord Gustafsson, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The audience thought a goal was coming when Cristian Sancho got free with Tord Fors in the 84th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Daniel Zorita received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 84th minute. Tord Fors tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Cristian Sancho might have been able to make a better finish in the 86th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Tord Fors. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Cristian Sancho ran back to his position shaking his head. Tord Fors made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Daniel Zorita in the 88th minute of play.
