Auguste Lorre was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Tomas Illescas sent away a hard shot on goal in the 10th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. R.C. Marseille's Quentin Escudié managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Alex Chicote in the 14 minute of the game. Guillermo Mariano got a throw-in 16 minutes in the game and the ball was received by Tomas Illescas. 18 minutes in the game Alex Chicote did a throw-in, and the ball was quickly in game thanks to Patricio Costa. An unexpectedly hard shot by Tomas Illescas in the 19th minute of play forced R.C. Marseille's goalkeeper Auguste Lorre to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Tomas Illescas had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 25th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After having played for 29 minutes, Patricio Costa managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Venezuela's supporters crossed their fingers, but Patricio Costa was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 30th minute, Teddy Wendling hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. R.C. Marseille's Auguste Lorre played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Tomas Illescas in the 35th minute of play. Auguste Lorre took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Tomas Illescas, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 43rd minute, Tomas Illescas made a precise shot to the right of Auguste Lorre. R.C. Marseille's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-2. After the first half Venezuela were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Blaise Castera to make the kick off. 52 minutes into the match, R.C. Marseille's goalkeeper Auguste Lorre had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Tomas Illescas. The throw-in from Teddy Wendling in the 58th minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Venezuela's Guillermo Mariano. Joshua Secada made in the 61st minute of the game a quick throw-in and Patricio Costa immediately put the ball in play. Tomas Illescas received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 62nd minute. Auguste Lorre tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Auguste Lorre made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Patricio Costa in the 65th minute of play. Guillermo Mariano made in the 69th minute of the game a fairly good throw-in which was taken care of by Tomas Illescas. After a rather tough play, R.C. Marseille's Teddy Wendling got a free kick in the 71st minute. A collision led to R.C. Marseille getting a freekick after 74 minutes play. Omar Suchet hit a great ball. In the 76th minute Tomas Illescas shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Auguste Lorre saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. R.C. Marseille's Auguste Lorre proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 78th minute of the match, managed to save R.C. Marseille from getting a goal against them. Tomas Illescas could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 81st minute of the match, but Auguste Lorre made a huge save. 83 minutes in the game Rigoberto Mina did a throw-in, and the ball was quickly in game thanks to Tomas Illescas. 84 minutes into the match, Tomas Illescas dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Auguste Lorre, 0-3. 88 minutes into the game, Salvador Gisbert threw the ball into play from the sideline. R.C. Marseille's Omar Suchet quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. Tomas Illescas's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Auguste Lorre read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 90th minute of play. When Omar Suchet fell near the penalty area in the 91st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored R.C. Marseille's protests and gave Omar Suchet a yellow card for diving instead. After 91 played minutes R.C. Marseille got a freekick which was hit by Omar Suchet. Camilo Gaos got a throw-in 93 minutes in the game and the ball was received by Tomas Illescas. Venezuela played a much better game than R.C. Marseille and deserved their victory. The R.C. Marseille players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
