Newells Old Boys's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by André-Pierre Gignac in the 24th minute. Horacio Errapel fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 33rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jonathan Ferrant having to interfere. The Newells Old Boys fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-0. With a little luck, Newells Old Boys's Serafino Jurdan got control of the ball when Tomas Illescas tried to sneak it across the goal line. The supporters of Venezuela booed when Newells Old Boys was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 89 match minutes in a wonderful position. Cristian Calderon didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 96th minute, André-Pierre Gignac ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Jonathan Ferrant was frozen by the shot and now it was 5-0. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered when the referee blew the final whistle. Newells Old Boys had won after a very even match.
