Julio Vera made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cayetano Haitz in the 8th minute of play. After a defensive mix-up in Ecuador's zone, Cayetano Haitz stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Julio Vera came out of the goal and Cayetano Haitz tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Heiko Seedorf kicked well hit freekick during the 14th minute of the match. After 14 played minutes, Ecuador's Daniel Zorita shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Edmund Wieloch came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Ecuador reached it. In the 18th minute, Daniel Zorita made a precise shot to the right of Edmund Wieloch. Heiko Seedorf's late challenge caught a Ecuador's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Julio Vera was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it.
