Akis Sarafis showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Julian Murillo in the 11th minute of the match. 14 minutes into the match, AFC Ajax's goal looked a bit too open when Julian Murillo came free, but Akis Sarafis reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. AFC Ajax's Michelangelo Merganiotis got a good chance for a goal in the 17th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. A sloppy throw-in by Milagros Fraga in the 20th minute of the game went astray and was snapped up by AFC Ajax's Miltos Margaritidis. Julian Murillo's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Akis Sarafis read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 37th minute of play. In the 38th minute of the match Peru got a corner. AFC Ajax's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Luz Tejedor ran over to the corner to take the kick. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Julian Murillo in the 41st managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Akis Sarafis saved AFC Ajax from getting behind. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-2 lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Nikos Sterpis was the one to do the kick off. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Michelangelo Merganiotis in the 54th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Rolando Noboa prevented the ball from getting in the gole. After having played for 56 minutes, Julian Murillo managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Peru's supporters crossed their fingers, but Julian Murillo was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal.
