Gerardo Pozo kicked well hit freekick during the 13th minute of the match. Tony Chaves took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Mariano Lacasa, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Betão Vargas to make the kick off. With his leg Tony Chaves managed to avoid a goal in the 74thth minute, when Chile's Orlando Casaus fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. Tony Chaves made a fantastic save in the 87th minute, when Mariano Lacasa sent off a good shot on target. The audience thought a goal was coming when Mariano Lacasa got free with Tony Chaves in the 94th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Chile's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
