Morten Hestad showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-0. An unexpectedly hard shot by Morten Hestad in the 11th minute of play forced Costa Rica's goalkeeper Benito Sanz to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 13th minute, Steffen Askvik hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. When Morten Hestad came up free with the goalie in the 16th minute, the Åsnes fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Morten Hestad couldn't finish the play. 18 minutes into the match, Costa Rica's goalkeeper Benito Sanz had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Morten Hestad. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

Kristian Sandersen fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 54th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Benito Sanz having to interfere. In the 59th minute Rune Gjessing shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Benito Sanz saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The audience was convinced that Rune Gjessing's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Benito Sanz was relentless in the 61st minute of the game. 66 minutes into the match, Åsnes's goal looked a bit too open when Eliseo Noboa came free, but Christer Waaler reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line.
