Baldomero Suarez showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Agustín Saelices, who was totally free with the ball in the 15th minute. After some careless play in the Lanús defense, Agustín Saelices kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Baldomero Suarez. The Lanús fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Baldomero Suarez should have stopped the shot. With a little luck, Ecuador's Julio Vera got control of the ball when Roberto Puch tried to sneak it across the goal line. Ecuador's goalkeeper couldn't reach when Roberto Puch 19 minutes into the game got a good kick on the ball which found its way into goal just inside left pole. 2-1. An unexpectedly hard shot by Roberto Puch in the 23rd minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 31st minute the ball was on its way in behind Lanús's goalkeeper Baldomero Suarez, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. After having played for 33 minutes, Roberto Puch managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Lanús's supporters crossed their fingers, but Roberto Puch was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 33 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Roberto Puch. Lanús's Baldomero Suarez played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cristian Sancho in the 34th minute of play. 35 minutes into the match, Lanús's goal looked a bit too open when Cristian Sancho came free, but Baldomero Suarez reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Julio Vera took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Roberto Puch, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. A collision led to Lanús getting a freekick after 38 minutes play. Esteve Herrera hit a great ball. Julio Vera made an important save on a dangerous shot by Roberto Puch in the 42nd minute. Daniel Zorita blasted a shot towards the goal in the 43rd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Baldomero Suarez having to make a save. Baldomero Suarez made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Daniel Zorita in the 46th minute of play. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 2-1 at half-time.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Eloy Gaskon to strike the kick off in the second half. Baldomero Suarez made an important save on a dangerous shot by Felix Montenegro in the 54th minute. After some fancy dribbling in the 61st minute, Eloy Gaskon managed to get in a good position for a shot. Lanús's supporters rose to their feet, but Eloy Gaskon was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Julio Vera breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 63rd minute of the match, Cristian Sancho got a very nice opportunity to score, but Baldomero Suarez was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. In the 65th minute Ladislao Barros shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Julio Vera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 66 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Eloy Gaskon came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 67 minutes into the game, Lanús's Eloy Gaskon nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Julio Vera made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 3-1. In the 72nd minute, Camilo Gisbert hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Camilo Gisbert kicked well hit freekick during the 75th minute of the match. 76 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Jake Hursey came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 80 minutes into the game, Eloy Gaskon cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 4-1. Julio Vera was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The supporters of Ecuador booed when Lanús was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 82 match minutes in a wonderful position. Matt Le Tissier didn't get a good kick on the ball. Baldomero Suarez took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cristian Sancho, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 94th minute, Eloy Gaskon made a precise shot to the right of Julio Vera. Ecuador's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 5-1.
