Benito Sanz made an important save on a dangerous shot by Jose Senin in the 8th minute. The crowd rose to their feet as Aldo Pe kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Benito Sanz. That made the score 1-0 in the 9 minute of play. In the 16th minute, Celestino Urtsin hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After 17 played minutes Costa Rica got a freekick which was hit by Aaron Alcocer. 18 minutes into the game, Juan Rubio was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Costa Rica's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave atletic Luprechauns the free kick. Severiano Bartoli made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Aaron Alcocer in the 21st minute of play. After 23 played minutes atletic Luprechauns got a freekick which was hit by Luisito Buinton. The supporters of Costa Rica booed when atletic Luprechauns was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 30 match minutes in a wonderful position. Delmiro Eneko didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 35th minute Eliseo Noboa shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Severiano Bartoli saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. With 40 minutes on the clock, Alexander Carballo commited a dangerous tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him the red card. After 39 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Costa Rica! In the 43rd minute atletic Luprechauns were awarded a corner. Celestino Urtsin went to the cornerflag to take it. The corner ended in Celestino Urtsin almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Costa Rica's Benito Sanz did a great save. Af the end of the first half the score was 1-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.
