After some careless play in the Marquês de Herval defense, Julian Murillo kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Dida Taffarel. The Marquês de Herval fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Dida Taffarel should have stopped the shot. Julian Murillo's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Dida Taffarel read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 21st minute of play. In the 22nd minute of the match Peru got a corner. Marquês de Herval's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Luz Tejedor ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led Peru's Eliseo Mina to fire away a dangerous shot which Dida Taffarel despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Alfredo Martins got free with Rolando Noboa in the 24th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Dida Taffarel showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Julian Murillo, who was totally free with the ball in the 26th minute. Julian Murillo received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 27th minute. Dida Taffarel tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The supporters of Peru booed when Marquês de Herval was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 30 match minutes in a wonderful position. Selami Rezan didn't get a good kick on the ball. Peru's Alonso Berganza quite brazenly broke a throw-in by José Maria Ramalho, made in the 33rd minute of the game. After 35 played minutes Marquês de Herval got a freekick which was hit by German Cano. A sloppy throw-in by Alonso Berganza in the 36th minute of the game went astray and was snapped up by Marquês de Herval's José Maria Ramalho. Dida Taffarel showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Julian Murillo, who was totally free with the ball in the 39th minute. In the 45th minute the ball was on its way in behind Marquês de Herval's goalkeeper Dida Taffarel, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Peru were awarded a corner in the 47th minute after Marquês de Herval's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Luz Tejedor took the corner. The corner went over the outstretched arms of Marquês de Herval's goalie and right to Emmanuel Reyes. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. Marquês de Herval's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. Disappointed in the 0-1 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Alfredo Martins stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. 52 minutes into the match, Peru's Luz Tejedor sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Dida Taffarel narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 60th minute of the match, Luz Tejedor got a very nice opportunity to score, but Dida Taffarel was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. Marquês de Herval's Dida Taffarel proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 86th minute of the match, managed to save Marquês de Herval from getting a goal against them. In the 88th minute, José Maria Ramalho hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Dida Taffarel showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Rafael Gallo in the 90th minute of the match.
