Cristian Sancho fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 3rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Volker Harm having to interfere. Daniel Zorita sent away a hard shot on goal in the 5th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. FC Hamburg's Volker Harm played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Daniel Zorita in the 7th minute of play. After 10 minutes FC Hamburg's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Daniel Zorita who took care of the corner kick. The corner first didn't look so dangerous but when Luis Andino got the ball he succeeded in some way to get through the defenders to deliver a very hard score. Result 0-1. 10 minutes into the match. Volker Harm made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Daniel Zorita in the 17th minute of play. The supporters of FC Hamburg booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 17 match minutes in a wonderful position. Cristian Sancho didn't get a good kick on the ball. Daniel Zorita sent away a hard shot on goal in the 25th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Volker Harm showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Cristian Sancho in the 27th minute of the match. Ecuador were awarded a corner in the 28th minute after FC Hamburg's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Daniel Zorita took the corner. The corner led Ecuador's Agustín Saelices to fire away a dangerous shot which Volker Harm despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cristian Sancho in the 35th minute of play forced FC Hamburg's goalkeeper Volker Harm to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Volker Harm made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Daniel Zorita in the 38th minute of play. If Cristian Sancho had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 42nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. In the 42nd minute Cristian Sancho shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Volker Harm saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Volker Harm made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cristian Sancho in the 47th minute of play.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Daniel Zorita to make the kick off. In the 51st minute the ball was on its way in behind Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 52nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by Thoralf Blohm in the 55th minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After having played for 58 minutes, Pompiliu Roşculeţ managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. FC Hamburg's supporters crossed their fingers, but Pompiliu Roşculeţ was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 65th minute, Daniel Zorita fired away a killer shot towards the goal that, to the delight of Volker Harm, passed just outside the right post. 69 minutes into the match, Ecuador's Cristian Sancho sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Volker Harm narrowly saved just below the crossbar. After 72 played minutes FC Hamburg got a freekick which was hit by Gogita Gagnidze. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cristian Sancho in the 74th minute of play forced FC Hamburg's goalkeeper Volker Harm to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. FC Hamburg's Eduard Hilpert was substituted for Gogita Gagnidze. A collision led to FC Hamburg getting a freekick after 85 minutes play. Laurențiu Cinteză hit a great ball. After 92 minutes, Cristian Sancho mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Ecuador and the FC Hamburg players grew even worse after the yellow card. If Laurențiu Cinteză had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 95th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. 95 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Laurențiu Cinteză came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Ecuador were clearly unhappy with the draw, as they felt they had done enough to earn themselves a victory.
