Spectators: 43 (Terracing: 33, Seating: 10, VIP seats: 0) FC Hamburg's Laurențiu Cinteză started the match with a crisp pass. The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Laurențiu Cinteză's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Julio Vera read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 4th minute of play. In the 6th match minute, FC Hamburg was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Pompiliu Roşculeţ to maneuver through the defense. The FC Hamburg fans' excitement grew in the 8th match minute when FC Hamburg's Laurențiu Cinteză looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 1-0 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. In the 11th minute Daniel Zorita shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Volker Harm saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 12 played minutes FC Hamburg got a freekick which was hit by Gogita Gagnidze. FC Hamburg's Volker Harm played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Daniel Zorita in the 13th minute of play. In the 15th match minute, Ecuador was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Luis Andino to maneuver through the defense. Thoralf Blohm hit a great freekick 18 minutes into the match. Cristian Sancho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 20th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. 25 minutes into the match, Ecuador's Daniel Zorita sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Volker Harm narrowly saved just below the crossbar. After having played for 27 minutes, Laurențiu Cinteză managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. FC Hamburg's supporters crossed their fingers, but Laurențiu Cinteză was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a rather tough play, FC Hamburg's Frank Groth got a free kick in the 28th minute. Cristian Sancho scored 1-1 in the 29th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Volker Harm, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 33rd minute FC Hamburg were awarded a corner. Manfred Kottsieper went to the cornerflag to take it. A nice corner shot did that Manfred Kottsieper got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Julio Vera quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. Cristian Sancho recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 39th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Ecuador's zone, Laurențiu Cinteză stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Julio Vera came out of the goal and Laurențiu Cinteză tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Daniel Zorita was the one to do the kick off. Daniel Zorita could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 52nd minute of the match, but Volker Harm made a huge save. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Laurențiu Cinteză in the 55th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Julio Vera saved Ecuador from getting behind. A collision led to FC Hamburg getting a freekick after 57 minutes play. Ingolf Appenzeller hit a great ball. Julio Vera came out of the goal in the 67th minute to try and stop a shot by FC Hamburg's Pompiliu Roşculeţ. But to his dismay, Pompiliu Roşculeţ quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-1. Daniel Zorita could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 71st minute of the match, but Volker Harm made a huge save. FC Hamburg's Volker Harm played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Agustín Saelices in the 76th minute of play. With a little luck, FC Hamburg's Volker Harm got control of the ball when Daniel Zorita tried to sneak it across the goal line. The audience thought a goal was coming when Cristian Sancho got free with Volker Harm in the 81st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 82nd minute, Laurențiu Cinteză ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Julio Vera was frozen by the shot and now it was 3-1. FC Hamburg made a substitution. Eduard Hilpert replaced Gogita Gagnidze. Luis Andino sent away a hard shot on goal in the 87th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 96 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Ilkay Gündoğan came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Ecuador's supporters were dissatisfied at the end of the match because FC Hamburg had won, even though Ecuador had held more of the ball.
