In the 33rd minute of the match Mexico got a corner. Borussia Dortmund's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Joel Gaona ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led Mexico's Luca Rouco to fire away a dangerous shot which Yao Zhan Sang despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Fernando Grover in the 36th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Dante Lacasa saved Mexico from getting behind. Yao Zhan Sang showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Joel Gaona in the 37th minute of the match. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Tomas Levander during the 46th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Joel Gaona to make the kick off. Dante Lacasa showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Tomas Levander in the 56th minute of the match. The audience thought a goal was coming when Alberto Tafalla got free with Yao Zhan Sang in the 58th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. With an all-out effort, Mexico's Yao Zhan Sang threw himself towards the right post 66 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Joel Gaona, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. In the 68th minute, Joel Gaona made a precise shot to the right of Yao Zhan Sang. Borussia Dortmund's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-2. In the 80th minute Tomas Levander shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Dante Lacasa saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Dante Lacasa stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Baltazar Clavijo's shot from short distance in the 84th minute. Lautaro Mancebo sent away a hard shot on goal in the 86th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Borussia Dortmund's Emesto Llames was substituted for Tuan Lovell. Borussia Dortmund made a substitution. Fernandez Quintairos replaced Tomas Levander. Dante Lacasa took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Fernandez Quintairos, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 94 minutes into the game, Mexico's Alberto Tafalla nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Yao Zhan Sang made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-3. The Mexico players were relieved to hear the final whistle blow to end the match. The away crowd was happy to see their team win after a very tight game.
