Julio Vera tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 9 minutes into the match, Ecuador's Daniel Zorita sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Kim Hänninen narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Fragleses's Kim Hänninen played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cristian Sancho in the 13th minute of play. Julio Vera made a fantastic save in the 16th minute, when Zlatko Ibrahimović sent off a good shot on target. Zlatko Ibrahimović fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 17th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Julio Vera having to interfere. In the 22nd minute of the game Camilo Gisbert made a throw-in which Luis Andino played forward. In the 23rd minute Daniel Zorita shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kim Hänninen saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Ecuador were furious when Antonio Arias was red carded, 30 minutes into the game, but the referee dismissed their protests. Ecuador:s Julio Vera showed great skill when he stopped Wiktor Gomolka:s penalty. An unexpectedly hard shot by Zlatko Ibrahimović in the 34th minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 59th minute Cristian Sancho shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kim Hänninen saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 60 minutes, Zlatko Ibrahimović mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Fragleses and the Ecuador players grew even worse after the yellow card. Julio Vera showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Grzegorz Rasiak, who was totally free with the ball in the 85th minute. After having played for 93 minutes, Agustín Saelices managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ecuador's supporters crossed their fingers, but Agustín Saelices was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The Fragleses players were eager to celebrate when the final whistle sounded. They had somehow managed to win, even though the away team had held the majority of the possession.
