After 23 played minutes Ecuador got a freekick which was hit by Camilo Gisbert. Germán Figueres took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Daniel Zorita, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Eugeniusz Milko in the 37th minute of play. Ecuador's Julio Vera proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 40th minute of the match, managed to save Ecuador from getting a goal against them. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-1.

With a little luck, S.D NARCEA's Germán Figueres got control of the ball when Daniel Zorita tried to sneak it across the goal line. Germán Figueres made an important save on a dangerous shot by Felix Montenegro in the 67th minute. In the 68th minute, Daniel Zorita ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Germán Figueres was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-2. A collision led to S.D NARCEA getting a freekick after 74 minutes play. Roldán Quijana hit a great ball. 75 minutes into the match, S.D NARCEA's goal looked a bit too open when Luis Andino came free, but Germán Figueres reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The supporters of S.D NARCEA booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 75 match minutes in a wonderful position. Cristian Sancho didn't get a good kick on the ball. Daniel Zorita could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 83rd minute of the match, but Germán Figueres made a huge save. Daniel Zorita received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Germán Figueres came out and tried to block the shot, but Daniel Zorita slotted it home off the left post making it 0-3 in the 85th minute. Félix Zărnescu's late challenge caught a Ecuador's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Félix Zărnescu helped the player get up and apologised. Germán Figueres showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Agustín Saelices in the 93rd minute of the match.
